Purim

Purim
is celebrated on the 14th of Adar, which corresponds to late February
or mid-March. It is one of the most fun and relaxed holidays celebrating
another rescue of the Jewish people in ancient times. Following tradition,
the Purim story is read aloud from the Megillah, and the scroll of Esther,
in the synagogue. It is also traditional for those attending Purim to
come dressed as characters in the Purim story and to make noise –
stomp feet and shake gragers each time Haman’s name is mentioned
during the reading to drown out his evil name so it is never heard again.
Purim at Shearith Israel is one of the largest celebrations
of Purim in the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex and is one of the most popular
events of the year at the synagogue. It is a fun time for not only seniors
but teens, preschool children and young families as well. It is a celebration
that is not to be missed.
